Criminal Minds Season 13 Episode 3 Review: Blue Angel

If you've got a new character, why not show him off?

It was a spotlight episode for Matt Simmons on Criminal Minds Season 13 Episode 3.

Grisly Discovery - Criminal Minds Season 13 Episode 3

The Simmons family seemed to like having Matt home more because of his new job, especially his wife, Kristy.

Although, frankly, they're not going to get much alone time with those four cute children running around.

A sadistic unsub carving up successful businessmen took Matt back to his initial stomping grounds, Detroit, where he got his start in law enforcement.

He even got to reunite with an old co-worker, now Captain Adrian Scott, played by Brandon Jay McLaren. CBS just picked up the second season of McLaren's enjoyable Canadian crime drama Ransom (YEAH!).

Matt hypothesized that the unsub might be an unemployed member of the former Chaldean Mafia, and he was proven right in the end. I had never heard of that criminal organization, but it's an actual thing, not one of those made-for-TV constructs.

Matt even turned down Kimberly, the prostitute at the center of this episode, when she none to subtly came onto him while he was serving as her protective detail. This proves that he is quite content with Kristy, with whom he is now getting to spend more time.

Finally, Matt was the one who captured Gabriel, who should have kept running to kill again another day rather than attacking Matt outside his former home. But, by his actions, Gabriel proved he wasn't thinking that clearly.

Sifting Through Evidence - Criminal Minds Season 13 Episode 3

It took a lot of theorizing for BAU to figure out the unsub's secret, probably even more than usual.

At first, the unsub's motivation was difficult to fathom. Why was he attacking successful businessmen? Jealousy?

In the end, it was pretty simple motivation: Gabriel was a father dismissing his daughter's suitors who he didn't think were worthy.

The unsub was an unusual twist.  Typically it would be someone enamored of Dasha/Kimberly. Even the BAU was guilty of thinking the unsub might be someone seeking Kimberly's affection by eliminating his rivals.

But having the unsub be Kimberly's biological father just out of prison, whose sister was Kimberly's "mother," that was an enjoyable development. Kimberly rightfully was none too pleased with this turn of events.

Matt may have been the one who ended this case, but Reid was the one who brought about Gabriel's downfall by discerningly recognizing airplane noise in the back of the videos Gabriel had sent. Narrowing the search party forced Gabriel out of his safe hideout and spurred him into action more quickly that he probably was planning.

In the Air - Criminal Minds Season 13 Episode 3

This episode was moved up a week, and Reid seemed remarkably squared away, considering all that he has been through recently. He was rambling away about some esoteric concept about which the very smart people he works with were just shaking their heads.

While it's comforting to have someone approximating the old Spencer back, it just seemed kind of abrupt. After what Reid went through on Criminal Minds Season 12, it should take him a good portion of this season to properly heal. He was shooting up a practice range and throwing things on Criminal Minds Season 13 Episode 2, so let's have an adequate recovery period.

A positive development on this episode is that Garcia seems to finally be warming to Alvez. She even bestowed a nickname on him, Cool Hand Luke, which is a real badge of honor from her. Morgan has moved on, and it appears that Penelope may be doing so as well.

Alvez is definitely the best of the recent batch of new characters. He's proven he belongs on the first team that is the BAU and that he can pull his own weight.

Now it's Matt's turn to do the same.

Targets - Criminal Minds

The rest of the BAU didn't offer up a whole lot. Prentiss did suggest that the dead men might be involved with prostitutes, which led to Dasha/Kimberly and ultimately to Gabriel. As for JJ, Lewis, and Rossi, they were just kind of there.

All told, Gabriel wasn't a particularly memorable villain, just an overprotective father scarring the biological daughter who never knew he existed. Some episodes leave you wanting more of a character, but some definitely don't.

Next up, the unsub appears to be a state-of-the-art killer drone. Great, now we're dealing with psychotic aircraft or at least the person that flies one.

Does Matt belong on the BAU? Is Reid all better, or is he going to be up and down? What did you think of the case of the week? Comment below.

Criminal Minds Season 13 Episode 3 Quotes

This unsub seems organized, skilled and motivated. But so are we.

Kristy: You know the best thing about you going from the IRT to the BAU?
Matt: What's that?
Kristy: Now, after nearly 10 years of marriage, I get to share my bed with my husband on a semi-regular basis.
